What is an explosion/bombing investigation?

When an explosion occurs, one of the first responsibilities of the investigator is to determine whether the explosion is the result of accident, usually from the explosion of natural gas or propane or from a bombing or more commonly known as the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED). In order to make this finding, the investigator must not only accurately assess the scene, but conduct witness interviews, gather background information and collect physical materials/evidence that indicates the cause of the explosion.
